Bio/Research

Dr. Neis is a co-director of SafetyNet, a community research alliance in workplace health and safety. She has co-edited 5 books and co-authored more than 70 journal articles, book chapters and other contributions. Her work has appeared in a wide range of academic and popular publications, including: Human Ecology, Coastal Management, Environmental Research, Studies in Political Economy, Women's Studies International, The Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Canadian Journal of Regional Science. Dr. Neis's current areas of research focus on the health and environmental consequences of socio-economic change; occupational health in fishing and shellfish processing; gender, fisheries and globalization; and fish harvesters' ecological knowledge. She has been awarded a Trudeau Fellowship, the President's Award for Outstanding Research at Memorial University, the Atlantic Centre of Excellence Women's Health Leadership Award, and the Margaret Lowe Benston Award for combining research and activism. Dr. Neis is a Council member of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
