Bio/Research

Catherine Frost's teaching and research interests are in normative political theory and include nationalism, diversity issues, and contemporary theory. Her research work centres on questions of representation and justice, and she asks how and why systems of representation are created and re-created; what the consequences are for the people involved; and what the implications are for how we should conduct politics.

Her book, Morality and Nationalism, examines the history of nationalism in Ireland and Quebec and draws lessons from this experience for how we approach these issues in contemporary theory. This project led her to focus on the relationship between representation and collective life, and to ask about the implications of this relationship for liberal-democracy and multicultural accommodation.

Her research projects include looking at the relationship between national identity and inclusion. Her concern is few if any of the leading approaches to this issue contemplate the possibility that there might be goals between the claims of nationalism and difference, or that they could be reconciled in some form that would be acceptable for both sides. As it now stands, efforts to resolve the nationalism-diversity tension may rule out important alternatives prematurely, setting up populations for further problems. This project has been supported by funding from the Social Sciences and Humanites Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and a website containing research papers related to this project may be found here.

Another research focus concerns new media technologies and how these may be re-shaping social and political relations. Her interests in this area include investigating the impact that new communications practices may have on political relations.

Dr. Frost is also is a member of the multiculturalism research cluster in the Political Science department at McMaster, and is involved with the Ontario Legislature Internship Programme at Queenís Park which gives Canadian graduates an opportunity to develop in-depth, first-hand knowledge of the workings of the legislative process. Itís an outstanding program and she is always happy to speak to prospective applicants.

Her background outside academics includes having worked in political and corporate positions, first as a special policy assistant in the Ontario government, later as a communications consultant in PR and the financial services sectors.
