Bio/Research

Dr. Gibson is interested in mid- to lower crustal processes associated with mountain building events (orogenesis). His research focuses on structural, metamorphic, and U-Th-Pb geochronologic analyses of high-grade, polydeformed rocks exhumed from deep crustal levels. Dan's research is field intensive in areas such as the Selkirk and Monashee Mountains of southeastern British Columbia, central Yukon Territory, and the East Athabasca mylonite triangle in northern Saskatchewan . Fieldwork involves detailed mapping and sample collection for structural, metamorphic, and geochronologic analyses. Dan is also pursuing cutting-edge geochronologic techniques that utilize chemical mapping and in-situ U-Th-Pb analyses of radiogenic minerals such as monazite to link precise geochronologic ages with specific metamorphic and structural processes. Dan is currently looking for motivated graduate students interested in working on structural/tectonic problems within the Canadian Cordillera and northern Saskatchewan.
