Bio/Research

David is an Associate Professor and Acting Chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health at the University of Winnipeg. He teaches various courses in the Sport Coaching program and is also the Director of the National Coaching Institute in Manitoba. David completed his Ph.D. in Cognition and Learning at the University of Western Ontario. He also holds a M.Ed. in Coaching Studies from the University of Victoria and a B.A. in Sport Coaching from the University of Winnipeg. A Chartered Professional Coach (Ch.P.C.) through Coaches of Canada (formerly the Canadian Professional Coaches Association), he is a graduate of the National Coaching Institute (NCI) in Victoria and is a certified Level 5 Sailing Coach in the original National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

He teaches courses in sport pedagogy, motor learning, and sport ethics and his research interests encompass a variety of areas related to the impact of coaching, and coach education on youth sport experiences. He has delivered a number of presentations in the community on sport parenting and sport ethics. Through his involvement with the organization Coaches of Canada he has served on a number of panels resolving a variety of issues arising from Coach-Parent-Athlete-Sport Organization interaction.

As an athlete, David played a variety of high school sports. In 1974, at the age of 17, he joined the National sailing team when he finished 2nd in the World 470 team racing championships. He campaigned for 7 seasons, retiring following the 1980 Olympic boycott. David spent 18 years coaching sailing in the summer and working in the winter as a professional ski patroller/alpine ski instructor north of Vancouver BC. Turning to full-time coaching in 1992 David coached provincial sailing teams in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. While coaching in BC, the province won back-to-back national youth (18 & Under) championships. During this time, David was also an event coach with the Canadian Sailing Team. Retiring from coaching in 1998 David began a new career in coach education and managed the multi-sport apprentice coach practicum program during the 1999 Pan-Am Games.

David has served on the boards of Coaches of Canada since 2005, the Canadian Sport Centre –Manitoba from 1998-2003, Coaching Manitoba since 1994, and served on the Advisory Panel on Healthy Children and Youth to the Federal Minister of Health and on the Advisory Panel on Children’s Fitness Tax Credit to the Federal Minister of Finance.
