Bio/Research

Eric Galm is Associate Professor of music and Ethnomusicology. He directs the Trinity Samba Ensemble, a Brazilian drumming and singing group comprised of students from many academic disciplines. He is also the coordinator for the music track of the Trinity in Trinidad Global Learning Site. In April 2006, he was elected president of the Society for Ethnomusicology's Northeast Chapter. He has lived, studied and traveled extensively throughout Brazil, and has conducted research in Cuba and Trinidad. He holds degrees in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan and Tufts universities, percussion performance from the University of Michigan, and performance certificates from the Escola Brasileira de Música and the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

His teaching is based on an interactive kinesthetic process that incorporates hands-on music making with academic inquiry. He believes that music making processes can be related to other sociocultural aspects that help to define societies, and many of the topics that are explored in his music classes often directly relate to several disciplines throughout the college.
