Bio/Research

Eric D. Lehman has taught at the University of Bridgeport for over fifteen years, and has directed the creative writing program for the last decade. In addition to his work in the English Department, in the past he has taught for the Distance Learning, IDEAL, and Education programs. He is the editor of the school literary magazine, Groundswell, and of the faculty essay series, The Commons. He lectures often outside the context of the University and has given over a hundred presentations of his research to historical societies, museums, and other groups.

Professor Lehman is the author of many books about the history and culture of his adopted state, including A History of Connecticut Food, Literary Connecticut, A History of Connecticut Wine, Bridgeport: Tales from the Park City, and Hamden: Tales from the Sleeping Giant. He has also written a travel guide, The Insiders' Guide to Connecticut, and a memoir, Afoot in Connecticut: Journeys in Natural History, which was nominated for the Pushcart Prize. His biography Becoming Tom Thumb: Charles Stratton, P.T. Barnum, and the Dawn of American Celebrity was recently released by Wesleyan University Press and won the Henry Russell Hitchcock Award from the Victorian Society of America and was chosen as one of the American Library Association's outstanding university press books of the year. His ninth and tenth books are forthcoming in 2015.

In addition to his many books, Professor Lehman's essays, reviews, and stories have been published in dozens of journals and magazines, from Gastronomica to Antiques Trader. He is also one of America's top scholars of author Henry Miller, writing annually for Nexus: The International Henry Miller Journal and other publications.
