Bio/Research

Frank Martignetti has served as Director of Choral Activities at UB since 2005 and has coordinated graduate studies in music education since 2011. Under his leadership, UB’s choral program has grown steadily since its restart in 2005, including collaborations with a variety of community music organizations, and performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

Since 2008, Professor Martignetti has also served as the Artistic Director of the Mystic River Chorale, a community chorus in southeastern Connecticut founded in 1984. Under his direction, the Chorale has broadened its community outreach, presented grant-funded regional premieres, collaborated with area high school choirs, community choirs, and the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, and had singers make their Avery Fischer Hall debut. Additionally, he is an experienced church musician and music director for school, community and regional theater.

Professor Martignetti's work with future music teachers is informed by his ten years of K-12 teaching experience, almost exclusively in urban schools. In 2006, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra recognized his efforts in the New Haven Public Schools by naming him a recipient of its Excellence in Music Teaching Award.

Professor Martignetti's current research uses ethnographic and case study approaches to study music teaching and learning in urban public schools. His writing has appeared in the Choral Journal, the Music Educators’ Journal, and Visions of Research in Music Education. He has presented clinics, papers and workshops at conferences and organizations including the Bridgeport Boys Choir, College Music Society, Michigan State University, Montclair State University, New Haven Public Schools, Rhode Island Music Educators Association, and the Society for Music Teacher Education.

Professor Martignetti is available for adjudication, clnics, workshops, and guest conducting.
