Bio/Research

Gerard Seijts received his PhD from the U. of Toronto in 1998. Prior to joining the Richard Ivey School of Business in 2000, Gerard was on the faculty at the I.H. Asper School of Business at the U. of Manitoba.

Gerard is teaching on several Ivey leadership programs with executives from organizations such as Maple Leaf Foods, KPMG, Vale Inco, SC Johnson, among others. He has also delivered workshops and presentations to senior and mid-level managers from organizations such as WestJet Airlines, Deloitte, the Conference Board of Canada, All Weather Windows, and Melcrum Publishing on topics such as leading change, team leadership, designing effective organizations, strategic interviewing, managerial negotiations, and behavioral decision-making. He has worked with organizations such as Pink Elephant, Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration, Kaupthing Bank, Landsbanken, and Swimming Canada. Gerard has also worked with local government - both in Ontario and Manitoba - on issues such as leadership, change, and organizational culture. He has taught EMBA, MBA and undergraduate courses in leadership, leading change, organizational behavior, human resource management, performance management, managerial negotiations, staffing, and behavioral decision-making.

His research activities, spanning journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers, cover a wide range of topics including leadership, change, goal setting, teams, organizational justice, and performance management. His research has been published in outlets such as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Executive, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Human Performance, Applied Psychology: An International Review, International Journal of Selection and Assessment, Journal of Business Ethics, Employee Responsibilities and Rights Journal, Canadian Psychology, and the Canadian Journal of Behavioral Science. He has secured funding for his research from various sources, including the SSHRC.

Gerard also writes practitioner-oriented articles for outlets including Business Horizons, Organizational Dynamics, the Ivey Business Journal, hr.com, hrpao.com and hrprofessional. He has written cases on topics including but not limited to leading change, organizational turnarounds, crisis management, organizational culture and alignment, whistleblowing, and conflict in teams. Gerard has worked with executives from companies such as ING Direct, Air Canada, WestJet, Telus, Deloitte, White Rose, Stratford Festival, London-based hospitals, Cordon Bleu - Tomasso, the YMCA and the Icelandic Police Force in developing teaching materials.

In 1999, Gerard received the Associates Award for excellence in both teaching and research. In 2005 and 2007, he received the Innovation in Teaching Award from the Richard Ivey School of Business. He was awarded the MBAA Lawrence G. Tapp Excellence in Teaching Award in 2008 and 2009. In 2008 he was awarded the Canadian Association of Municipalities Administrators Education Award for his work with the city of London.

He is a member of the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Association, the Canadian Psychological Association, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He is - or has served - on the Editorial Board of Applied Psychology: An International Review, the Journal of Organizational Behavior and the Canadian Journal of Behavioral Science. He is an ad-hoc reviewer for numerous other peer-reviewed journals in the field of organizational behavior and human resource management.
