Bio/Research

Heather McLeod-Kilmurray holds an SJD from the University of Toronto , having been awarded a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship, and an LL.M. first class from the University of Cambridge . She was law clerk to Chief Justice Isaac of the Federal Court of Appeal. She practiced as Counsel at Environment Canada, and as Assistant Solicitor at the Sheffield City Council in England

Her doctorate, “The Process of Judging the Environment: Civil Procedure, Environmental Ethics and its Effects on Environmental Law,” focuses on the approach to procedures such as class actions, injunctions and public interest standing in environmental cases. She has recently written on the issue of GM drift, from the perspective of class action litigation, and is currently analyzing this problem from the ecofeminist perspective. She has also co-written with Jamie Benidickson the chapter on Canada for the forthcoming Kluwer book The Role of the Judiciary in Environmental Governance: Comparative Perspectives.

She teaches Environmental Law, Torts, Legal Research and Writing, Administrative Law and Fondements de la common law. Her primary research interests are in the areas of Environmental Law, Legal Process, Legal Principles and Environmental Ethics, Ecofeminism, Administrative Law and Tort Law.
