Bio/Research

Dr. Eberl's and his students' current research areas include predictive food microbiology as well as waste and wastewater treatment, apiculture and other environmental engineering aspects.

Most of Eberl's current research stems from mathematical modelling and computer simulation of biofilm processes. These are communities of micro-organisms living in a slime layer on surfaces in aquatic systems.

Eberl is also looking into spatio-temporal biofilm development. This involves three-dimensional, nonlinear diffusion-reaction equations and/or discrete local rule-based models. Both approaches are coupled with the governing equations of fluid dynamics and result in a weird system of partial differential equations. The results are mathematically far too complicated to be treated analytically, so Eberl tries to handle them numerically.

Whenever he finds time he tries to look into other mathematical problems in biology and biotechnology as well.
