Bio/Research

Dr. Imogen R. Coe was the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Science at Toronto Metropolitan University. Imogen possesses a doctorate (Ph.D.) and masters degree in Biology from the University of Victoria, B.C. and a bachelor’s degree from Exeter University in the U.K. She is an affiliate scientist with Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, Keenan Research Centre at St. Michael’s Hospital which is where her research program is located. She is an accomplished cell biologist and is internationally known for her work on membrane transport proteins (transporters) that are the route of entry into cells for a large class of anti-cancer, anti-viral and anti-parasite drugs. She has served on NSERC, CIHR and NCIC scientific review panels and continues to supervise research projects of undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research associates in her group.

Imogen also serves on the Board of Directors of the Michael Garron Hospital (formerly the TEGH) and the Canadian Mining Innovation Council. She is a member of the Executive Advisory Council for Champions for Change, an initiative of FIRST Canada also serves as an advisor to hErVOLUTION, a non-profit organization working on access to innovative education and employment services to girls and young women in STEM.

Imogen is well known for her promotion and advocacy on equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). She is considered to be a Canadian thought leader in this area and is a highly sought-after speaker and panelist on the topic. In 2016, she was announced as one of WXN’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada, external link, in the Sunlife Financial Trailblazer & Trendsetter category.
