Garfinkel, who studies the costs and benefits of public policies, has a range of interests that include fragile families (defined as unmarried parents and their children), as well as the American welfare state. He has written on poverty, income transfers, program evaluation and child support. Garfinkel’s research on child support has influenced legislation in Wisconsin and other American states, in addition to the U.S. Congress, Great Britain, Australia and Sweden.
