Bio/Research

I am a political scientist who studies issues of gender, human rights, development, global governance, international political economy, transnational feminism, and feminist methodologies.

My current research project, funded by SSHRC, focuses on how the articulation and diffusion of gender mainstreaming as a global policy influences and/or constrains gender mainstreaming efforts of human rights and development non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The study considers how the meaning of the global policy norm of gender mainstreaming, as propagated by the United Nations and World Bank, becomes contested and reinterpreted by NGOs, positioning NGOs as both norm consumers and norm diffusers. As such, my project examines the factors that account for NGOs' different experiences in adopting gender mainstreaming strategies in their projects and programming activities.
