President Bollinger is a renowned legal scholar, with expertise in free speech and the First Amendment. He has published numerous books, articles, and essays in scholarly journals on these and other subjects; his books include Eternally Vigilant: Free Speech in the Modern Era and Images of a Free Press. Bollinger, a former dean of the law school and president of the University of Michigan, was the named defendant in the twin Supreme Court cases Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v. Bollinger, which respectively affirmed and clarified diversity as a compelling justification for affirmative action.
