Bio/Research

Dr. Luke Copland is an Associate Professor and Director of the Laboratory for Cryospheric Research in the Department of Geography at the University of Ottawa. His research focuses on the dynamics and recent changes of glaciers and ice shelves, primarily in northern Canada. This research combines remote sensing with field measurements, and is primarily aimed at understanding the controls on ice motion and glacier mass balance, and how these may change under a changing climate. Together with Dr. Derek Mueller (Carleton University) he maintains a field site at Purple Valley on northern Ellesmere Island to monitor the Milne and Petersen ice shelves. He is also working with colleagues from the Geological Survey of Canada to quantify iceberg fluxes into Baffin Bay and the Arctic Ocean from the glaciers and ice caps on Baffin, Ellesmere, Devon and Axel Heiberg Islands.
