Mamdani is an important voice in contemporary debates about Africa’s changing role. He is a former chief adviser to the U.N. High Level Panel on Alliance of Civilizations, the former director of Columbia’s Institute of African Studies and the founding director of the Centre for Basic Research in Kampala, Uganda. Recent works include Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War and the Roots of Terror and When Victims Become Killers: Colonialism, Nativism and Genocide in Rwanda.
