Bio/Research

Matthew Bolton can speak to members of the media about medical alarm masking; that is when medical alarms sound simultaneously, making one or more of them inaudible. The phenomenon can make it difficult for caregivers to differentiate alarms, including those that signal life-threatening emergencies.Bolton is lead investigator of a $750,000 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant to identify these auditory blind spots. The effort, which involves developing a computer-based tool that uses the same principles as MP3 audio files, may help reduce preventable deaths associated with alarm system failures.
