Bio/Research

Dr. Liang joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa as an assistant professor in 1991. He became an associate professor in 1996 and a full professor in 2000. His research areas include machinery and structure fault detection and diagnosis; manufacturing planning, control, and automation; soft computing; smart machine and smart factory; biomedical signal processing and instrumentation.

He has initiated many funded projects on machinery fault detection, renewable energy facility monitoring, integrated manufacturing planning, intelligent manufacturing control, and optimization. He has collaborated with the IMTI of NRC, GasTOPS, Ltd., and other organizations on several joint projects. Dr. Liang has been serving as an Editorial Board Member of the IIE Transactions since 1996 and is an active reviewer for more than 20 professional journals (including IEEE Transactions, ASME Transactions, and IIE Transactions) and various granting agencies. Dr. Liang has served in the NSERC Grant Selection Committee (GSC) (2007-2010), and NSERC Scholarships and Fellowships Selection Committee (2003-2005). He is a recipient of the Joseph Whitworth Award of the IMechE (2005) and has been listed in Who’s Who in the World (2007, 2009). He is also a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and a member of IIE.
