Bio/Research

Misao Dean grew up in Toronto, and moved to Victoria in 1989. She teaches courses on the Canadian novel, and is interested in non-fiction prose and travel writing as well. She is a strong believer in the idea that academic writing need not be boring, and literary theory need not be confusing. She has just completed a study of the canoe in discourses of English-Canadian nationalism, which includes chapters on Eric Morse, Bill Mason, and the Canadian Canoe Museum. This book will appear in Fall 2012 with University of Toronto Press.

She is currently researching the representation of political activism in contemporary fiction, and writing a memoir about motorcycling.
