Bio/Research

My main area of interest and expertise is in stress and emotions and how they promote addictive behaviors, chronic disease and health outcomes. Stress promotes addictive habits that are hard to break, and is associated with high rates of relapse. Furthermore, overeating and continued use of these substances also lead to risk for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes etc. There are now exciting new advances relating to stress related biomarkers and brain markers that promote such behaviors and changes related to compulsive seeking of such behaviors. These in turn increase stress and also chronic disease risk. Identification of these markers will allow us to detect individuals at risk early, develop targeted interventions for those at risk and also specifically treat those who are most susceptible to repeated relapase of such behaviors.
