Bio/Research

Dr. Monahan's research focuses on investigating the climate system from a probabilistic perspective. This research involves the interplay of two main themes: firstly, the development and application of statistical tools for the analysis of climate data, and secondly, the mechanistic study of climate variability through the coupling of the physics of the ocean and the atmosphere with the mathematical theories of stochastic processes and dynamical systems. In particular, Dr. Monahan is interested in the interaction of nonlinearity and high-frequency variability in the climate system. Aspects of the climate system that he and his group have investigated from these perspectives include El Nino and the Southern Oscillation, the thermohaline circulation, coupled upper-ocean/ecosystem dynamics, the low-frequency variability of the extratropical atmosphere, and sea-surface winds.
