Dr. Souchen is a Canadian historian specializing in the history of science, technology, warfare, and the environment in the 20th century. He is the author of "War Junk: Munitions Disposal and Postwar Reconstruction in Canada" (UBC Press, 2020) and co-editor of a forthcoming book on "Canada’s military-industrial complex."
He is currently researching two projects:
1) Underwater Munitions and Military Pollution: This project's goals are to explore the operational, scientific, logistical, and policy contexts that enabled the dumping of munitions into the oceans between 1918 and 1972. It also examines the environmental impacts of disarmament, weapons destruction, and unexploded ordnance.
2) Health and Environmental Hazards on Canada’s Industrial Front: This project examines munitions procurement, contamination, exposure, and pollution in Canada’s military-industrial complex. It focuses on the history of industrial hygiene, health science, chemistry, TNT poisoning, and workplace safety in Canada’s chemicals and explosives factories during the Second World War.
