Dr. Valverde’s research focuses on the diverse effects of anesthetic and analgesic drugs in small and large animals, which includes cardiopulmonary effects, drug interactions, and analgesic and sedative properties. These areas of research are important to improve animal comfort and wellbeing, general anesthesia safety, and to decrease anesthetic morbidity/mortality.
Valverde’s current research looks at analgesic effects of epidural local anesthetics in dogs by determining the correct dosing method for abdominal and pelvic limb surgery. In another project, different doses of intraoperative intravenous lidocaine in horses would determine the safety and benefits of this drug in decreasing the requirements of inhalational anesthetics, and the effects on the quality of recovery after surgery.
