Bio/Research

Alexandre Sèvigny specializes in the study of the content and meaning of human communication. In the McMaster Communication Metric Lab, he uses quantitative and qualitative methods to find patterns of meaning and grammatical similarity in content from diverse sources: news, political speeches, medical communication, literary texts and communication disorders. He has also worked in Indigenous Studies, and is co-author of a dictionary of contemporary Mi'gmaq and several articles on First Nations language and cultural preservation. In 2006, he was awarded the Petro Canada Young Innovator Award for excellence in research and teaching. He is sometimes called upon to deliver political communications commentary in Hamilton and occasionally in the national media. In 2009, he was included in the Hamilton Spectator's Top 40 under 40 list. Alexandre serves as an occasional political communication advisor, having served as director of communications for politicians at the provincial and federal levels, and as senior advisor to a senior critic in the federal Parliament.
