Dr. Hathaway researches illicit drug use, harm reduction, human rights, and Canadian drug policy. His research on cannabis, spanning over a decade, examines use in marginalized and mainstream populations and draws out implications for social policy development. He has held a number of federal grants to study the use of marijuana for medical conditions and broader normalizing trends of cannabis consumption using surveys, interviews, and ethnographic methods. He has published extensively in these areas in journals including the "Canadian Journal of Law and Society" (2001), "International Journal of Drug Policy" (2001), "Deviant Behavior" (1997, 2004), "Drug and Alcohol Review" (2002, 2005), "Field Methods" (2003), "Contemporary Drug Problems" (2004), "Criminology and Criminal Justice" (2011), and "Contemporary Justice Review" (2007).
