Bio/Research

As an ecologist with a strong interest in sustainable resource management, I consider it my job to be interested in all ecosystems and all sciences, including social sciences, economics, and history. But of course, we have to focus, and for the last 10 years or so, my focus has been on the applied ecology of forest ecosystems. My current research focuses on the application of ecology to forest management and forest restoration. Ongoing research projects include studies of tree growth-environment relationships and rainfall interception in tropical plantations, and an investigation of the effects of cattle grazing on aspen regeneration in harvested stands in western Manitoba. Projects that are currently being developed include investigations of tree growth in relation to climatic variatioin in natural and planted stands of red pine and jack pine, and a nascent program in silviculture and climate change.

I have had a broad working and academic education in forestry and forest ecology, which has seen me do field projects in warm temperate, boreal, and tropical forests. My work and views on forest management are also informed by the years that I spent working for a forest management consultancy in northern British Columbia. During that time, I tramped across thousands of hectares of cut, regenerating, and soon-to-be-cut forest, learning much about the good, the bad, and the ugly of Canadian Forest Management in the process.
