Dr. Dutta researches on energy, primarily on clean and sustainable-renewable technologies in the changing global context.
His interests include biomass and agri-residue processing and conversion, renewable and cleaner energy technologies, efficient boiler design, design and assessment of advanced energy systems, and life cycle analysis and thermodynamic optimization,
Presently, Dutta's research program has targeted the following three areas:
1) Biomass torrefaction - to support immediate implementation of GHG reduction in large power plants with carbon-neutral biomass; 2) Chemical looping thermal gasification of biomass - to help achieve near-term GHG reduction through production of hydrogen from biomass;
3) Biomass conversion in supercritical water - aimed at longer-term GHG reduction, as future frontier technology for hydrogen production from biomass.
Since his tenure with the School of Engineering, he has been taking initiative in developing a biomass conversion research program (BCRP) by securing research funding from a number of governmental agency and industry. The broad objective of his research program is to help Canada better meet the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation through advanced biomass conversion technologies and CO2 sequestration.
