Bio/Research

Dr. Lawniczak’s research is in both the methodology and the application domains. The methodologies she applies and to which she has contributed in the past include cognitive agents, agent-based systems, cellular automata, lattice gas cellular automata, and computational intelligence. She has applied the above methodologies to the areas of natural and engineered systems, such as data communication networks; transportation networks; the spread of epidemics; pattern formation in chemically reacting systems; and homoepitaxial growth. She has published numerous papers in the areas of her research.

Lawniczak's research is multidisciplinary in nature and provides her graduate students and younger collaborators with an opportunity to apply and develop a variety of technical skills in computational sciences (applied mathematics, statistics, computer science). Lawniczak's research requires model development, simulation, visualization and analysis of data via a variety of statistical techniques. Her most recent research is on cognitive agents able to learn from their environment and from other agents.

Lawniczak holds an M.Eng. (summa cum laude) in mathematics from the Institute of Mathematics, Faculty of Fundamental Problems in Technology, Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland) and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Southern Illinois University (USA). She has been a professor at Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA, USA), at the University of Toronto, and at the University of Guelph, since 1989.

Lawniczak held several visiting positions at various institutions. She has been a visitor, collaborator, and consultant at the Center for Nonlinear Studies of Los Alamos National Laboratory in the USA and has been both program visitor and non-program visitor at The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, both in Waterloo and Toronto, where she organized various scientific activities and served on the Board of Directors and on the Council. Lawniczak has also been a program fellow at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM), University of California, Los Angeles, USA and a Principal Investigator in Mathematics at the Energenius Centre for Advanced Nanotechnology, University of Toronto. She was invited to visit various universities (e.g. the University of Bonn, Centre for Stochastic Processes at the University of North Carolina, Bartol Research Institute at the University of Delaware, the University of Roma, etc).

She has been a President of the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society and a President of the Canadian Applied Mathematics Society. She has been a Member of the Research Council of the Hugo Steinhaus Center, Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland, a board member of the Waterloo Institute for Complexity and Innovation and a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Mathematics Society. She has also been a Chair of IEEE Toronto's “Signals & Computational Intelligence" Chapter.

Lawniczak is a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, a senior member of the IEEE, and a fellow of The Fields Institute.
