Bio/Research

Prof. Smith teaches and conducts research in the field of political theory. She is particularly interested in jurisprudence and normative political theory; distributive justice and socioeconomic rights; poverty assistance programs and public education policy; feminist theory and feminist legal studies; critical race theory; and the rhetoric of modern State power and citizenship.

She is the author of three books, Welfare and Sexual Regulation (Cambridge, 2007), Laclau and Mouffe: The Radical Democratic Imaginary (Routledge, 1998) and New Right Discourse on Race and Sexuality: Britain, 1968-1990 (Cambridge University Press, 1994). She is the co-editor of New Critical Writings in Political Sociology, Vols. I-III (Ashgate, 2009); Guest Co-editor of a Thematic Issue on Reproductive and Genetic Technology, Signs: Journal of Women and Culture (34: 4 (2009)); and guest editor of a Special Issue on Feminist Theory and Welfare Reform, Feminist Theory, (9:2 (2008)).
