Bio/Research

I am Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and Associate Member of the Department of Philosophy, McGill University, and specialize in contemporary political theory and the history of political philosophy. I received a BA(Hon) from the University of Winnipeg in 1992, an MPhil from Oxford University in 1994, and a PhD from Harvard University in 2001.

My research focusses on democratic theory and questions of identity, nationalism, and cosmopolitanism; immigration and border control; the relation between the passions, rhetoric, discourse, practical reason, and politics; Habermas and discourse ethics; and seventeenth- and eighteenth-century philosophy, particularly Hobbes and Rousseau.

I am currently working on a book on Hobbes's accounts of language, natural science, and moral and political philosophy, titled The Oscillations of Thomas Hobbes: Between Insight and the Will, and a project on democratic theory and the coercive regulation of borders.
