Prior to moving to the academia, he was an R&D Scientist at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Chalk River Laboratories. During his tenure at AECL he was involved in several strategic projects related to the design of key components in the advanced CANDU reactor (ACR-1000) as well as the operation of existing CANDU reactors in Canada and abroad. Dr. Mohany performs leading edge research related to aeroacoustics, flow-sound interaction, flow-induced vibration, noise and vibration control, and wear analysis.
His research addresses a wide range of practical engineering problems related to the design and operation of automotive, aerospace, and energy systems. The main objective of Dr. Mohany’s research is to provide fundamental understanding of the physics underlying the flow-sound-structural interaction mechanisms using experimental, analytical and numerical modeling in order to develop innovative techniques that can be used to alleviate and control the occurrence of acute noise problems and/or excessive vibrations in real-life industrial applications.
His research group has contributed significantly to the knowledge transfer through successful collaborations with many industrial partners such as; COG (CANDU Owners Group), UNENE (University Network of excellence in Nuclear Engineering), Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Bombardier Aerospace, Vibro-Acoustics, WEGU Manufacturing, VertiGo Digital Displays, and Stoddard Silencers. Dr. Mohany has received many distinction and merit awards, including the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Literature Award in 2020, the ASME Editor’s Choice Award for outstanding technical paper that contribute to the design, analysis and development of pressure vessel components and their applications in nuclear power plants in 2013, and the Achievement Award from the Component Life Technology Branch at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) in 2008. Dr. Mohany is a Fellow of the ASME and the CSME. He is currently serving as an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology.
