Barbara Frisken is Professor of Physics at Simon Fraser University, where she has recently completed a five-year term as chair of her department. She completed her Ph.D. in physics at the University of British Columbia in 1989, and was a postdoctoral fellow at University of California Santa Barbara for three years before joining the faculty at SFU in 1992.
Her research is focused on understanding the influence of micro- and nano structure on material properties of soft matter systems; current projects include studies of proton-conducting polymer membranes and phase separation and crystallization in colloid/polymer mixtures. Barbara's involvement in the CAP includes a term as Chair of the Division of Condensed Matter and Materials Physics (1997-1998), Chair of the Publications Committee (1999-2001), Chair of the Committee to Encourage Women in Physics (2002-2005), and as a Member of IUPAP Committee 10, Structure and Dynamics of Condensed Matter (2008-2011).
