Kirshenbaum received a B.A. from Columbia University and an M.F.A. from Brooklyn College. She is the author of two story collections, Married Life and History on a Personal Note and five novels, On Mermaid Avenue, A Disturbance in One Place, Pure Poetry, Hester Among The Ruins, and An Almost Perfect Moment ; the latter two were chosen as Notable Books of the Year by The Chicago Tribune . Her short fiction and essays have appeared in many magazines and anthologies, and her books have been translated into eight languages. A recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts grant, and nominated for The National Jewish Book Award, she has twice won Critic's Choice Award and was selected by Granta Magazine as one of the Best Young American Novelists. Currently, she has two novels under film option. A new novel, The Scenic Route, will be published in May 2009.
