Bio/Research

Dr. Deaton’s research focuses on two key themes: 1) land and property and 2) food and agricultural standards. He currently directs the Greenbelt Project, which has a mission of supporting the independent study of the economic effects of Ontario’s recently enacted Greenbelt.

Deaton received his PhD in agricultural economics, from Michigan State University, in 2002, and worked as a post-doctoral associate from 2002 to 2004 at the Institute for Food and Agricultural Standards (IFAS) at Michigan State University.

Deaton has worked and conducted research in a number of different settings. From 1995 to 1997 he directed a non-profit project that provided grants to low-income households in rural Kentucky. During this time he also coordinated a project that led to the creation of a county-wide water and sewer district in Letcher County, Kentucky.

From 1993 to 1995 he was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lesotho where he lived and worked as a school teacher and a community organizer. In Lesotho, he initiated a number of projects including projects that led to the development of water supply infrastructure and the marketing of sheep.
