Dr. Baetz, who was previously Chair of the Department from 1995 to 1998, is currently the Director of the Engineering and Society Program and Director of the Engineering and International Studies Program. He will continue in these roles when he assumes his new duties.

Dr. Baetzís research interests in the areas of sustainable communities and sustainable infrastructure have been a great asset to the Faculty as it increases its teaching and research efforts in sustainable engineering as part of a new five-year strategic plan launched in 2009.
Dr. Baetz is also the recipient of several teaching awards including, most recently, the Presidentís Teaching Award for Excellence in Instruction in 2008 and the McMaster Student Union Teaching Excellence Award in 2007. He first joined McMaster in 1988 and has been an active member of the University community, as well as the community of Hamilton.
Planning and Design of Sustainable Communities:
Canadian municipalities are being forced to reassess how they develop and how they provide a wide range of infrastructure elements and services. This avenue of research is focussing on the development of decision support systems to aid in the evaluation and design of municipal infrastructure from a sustainability perspective.
