Greene, one of the world’s best-known string theorists, is the author of The Elegant Universe, which he helped transform into a three-hour documentary for PBS’s NOVA. Because of his work, lay audiences have become more familiar with string theory. The theory posits that the tiniest and most basic unit of all matter is not an atom, electron, quark or any other particle, but a infinitely small loop of string. Greene also is co-director of Columbia’s Institute for Strings, Cosmology, and Astroparticle Physics (ISCAP), which studies string theory through astronomical observation.
