Bio/Research
Dr. Smith is Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa. He trained in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology in Ottawa. He then completed a Clinical Research Fellowship, specializing in Lupus at the University of Connecticut. He returned to Ottawa in 1983 to take a full-time position in Rheumatology at the Ottawa Hospital. He served as deputy chair and then chair of the undergraduate musculoskeletal block. He has chaired the Royal College Examination Board in Rheumatology and served as Chair of The Canadian Council of Academic Rheumatologists (CCAR.) He acted as a liaison officer with the executive of the Canadian Rheumatology Association.
Dr. Smith served as Deputy Chair-Clinical for the Department of Medicine from 1999-2009 and was appointed head, Division of Rheumatology in 2003. He is actively involved in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents and fellows. He is the program director for the Rheumatology training program. Dr. Smith specializes in care of patients with complex diseases such as Systemic Lupus, Scleroderma and rheumatic diseases in pregnancy. Based at the Arthritis Centre in the Riverside Campus of The Ottawa Hospital, his current focus is on developing the division’s priority programs in Advanced Therapeutics and the Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases. He does outreach clinics in Renfrew and in Baffin Island. Dr Smith is an elected member of the board of The Ottawa Hospital Academic Medical Organization (TOHAMO) since 2006.
