Bio/Research

I received my PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Western Ontario in 2002 and my MA in Clinical Psychology from the University of Western Ontario in 1994.

As part of my graduate school training, I worked with a number of different high schools and youth organizations as part of a project to help at-risk teens learn to develop healthy dating relationships. Prior to joining Laurier in 2012, I was the lead researcher on an evaluation project for a consortium of shelters for abused women in Southwestern Ontario.

I teach courses at both the graduate and undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Education, in the areas of quantitative research methodology, learning theories and child development, and equity and diversity. I also teach courses on mental health at both the undergraduate and graduate level, and am the developer and instructor for the Mental Health Certificate, a 80-hour seven module non-credit course for educators wanting to improve their knowledge of and ability to support students with mental health challenges in the K-12 sector.

The main focus of my research is ways in which we can offer prospective and current educators effective programs to support the development of inclusive classrooms for Ontario’s children and youth. At present, I am involved in the evaluation of a comprehensive training program to provide educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively support students with mental health needs and to promote positive mental health in the classroom. I am also involved in a project to examine school principals’ perspectives on mental health in an educational setting.
