Bio/Research

Christina Baade joined the McMaster University Faculty of Humanities in 2003. She holds a B.Mus. in clarinet and womenís studies from Northwestern University and an M.Mus. and Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research interests include early twentieth-century popular music; radio studies and the British Broadcasting Corporation; gender, queer, and critical race theory; and the historical interactions of mass media and music. Dr. Baadeís book, Victory Through Harmony: The BBC and Popular Music in World War II, was recently published with Oxford University Press. She has articles appearing in journals including Popular Music, Feminist Media Studies, and Atlantis, A Womenís Studies Journal / Revue díEtudes sur les femmes as well as the collections Big Ears: Listening for Gender in Jazz Studies and Floodgates: Technologies, Cultural Ex/change and the Persistence of Place. In addition, she is completing a SSHRC-funded research project, Swinging Nostalgia: Popular Music and the Cultural Memory of World War II, which examines the phenomena of nostalgia reissues, tribute performers, and fan communities for Second World War-era music. As a performer, she was a founding member of Yid Vicious klezmer ensemble, whose sophomore compact disc is on the Knitting Factory label, and appeared with ensembles including the Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra.

Dr. Baade teaches courses in popular music and performance studies, including The Rise of the Music Industry, Performance and Performativity, Gender and Performance, Creating Ceremonies, and the fourth-year performance studies seminar.
