Bio/Research

My interest and research over the course of my career has been to advance educational and professional understanding about curriculum development, programming, and evaluation. It is within this area of specialization that I have carried out my responsibilities both as a teacher of undergraduate and graduate courses and as a researcher and supervisor of graduate students. Within this broad and interdisciplinary field my research has examined learning processes and the conditions under which learning may occur in diverse settings, in direct relation to forces presented by learners and changing environments.

The early part of my research career furthered educational understanding about student learning in relation to its aesthetic and kinesthetic expressions through drama and dance in elementary classrooms. Over time, as a direct result of my instructional experiences and concerns in preservice teacher education, I expanded my research on learning to include teacher learning, and the approaches that contribute to its successes or failure in relation to professional support and practicum experiences.

More recently, my specialization in curriculum research has focussed on how to advance educational understanding about the new technologies, including multimedia and telecommunications, and their relationship to traditional and developing curriculum frameworks. My research examines the shifts in learning that are being driven and affected by massive technological change and which are demanding new approaches to education. Specifically, my research currently focuses on strategies to gain a better understanding of the features that make learning effective, relevant and accessible and the conditions under which learning can be made richer, more effective, and meaningful for adults in a web-based environment.
