Bio/Research

Cynthia Nicol's research interests focus on studying the interplay of mathematics and pedagogy in teaching elementary and middle school mathematics. Dr. Nicol is particularly interested in how teaching practice itself can be used as a site for professional learning. This involves investigating what experienced and preservice teachers learn from different modes of studying practice such as case studies, problem-based learning, lesson study, and collaborative inquiry. She is also interested in technology in teacher education and how new learning technologies can provide teachers with opportunities to study practice and teach curriculum. Action research and first person research frames much of her work.

Current research projects include: The Early Numeracy Project (ENP) - working with primary teachers across the province to study how the ENP is a context for teacher learning; and Learning in and from Practice with Digital Cases - working with preservice teachers to examine how digital video production of teaching and learning can provide opportunities for preservice teachers to frame, interpret, and solve problems of practice.
