Bio/Research

He is the author and editor of more than sixty academic publications, including the books Service‐Learning in Theory and Practice: The Future of Community Engagement in Higher Education (2010), which won the 2010 Critics Choice Book Award of the American Educational Studies Association; Service‐Learning and Social Justice Education (2008); and Teaching Social Foundations of Education (2005). Prior to working in higher education, Dr. Butin was a middle school math and science teacher and the chief financial officer of Teach for America. He received his Ph.D. in Social Foundations of Education from the University of Virginia; a M.A. in Liberal Education from St. John’s College; and a B.S. in Management Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Butin’s research focuses on issues of educator preparation & policy and community engagement. He has published book chapters, journal articles, book reviews, and policy papers in a wide range of academic and general audience publications, including the Philosophy of Education Yearbook, Equity & Excellence in Education, International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, Journal of College and Character, Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning, Journal of Philosophy of Education, The Review of Higher Education, Teachers College Record, and Educational Researcher. Dr. Butin has been an invited and keynote speaker at national and international conferences and events on issues of social justice education, service‐learning, and campus‐community partnerships.

Dr. Butin currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Northeast Regional Readiness Center and sits on three subcommittees: Early Childhood; Communities of Practice; and College Readiness. He is also the Executive Director for the Center for an Engaged Democracy, a research center and action hub for developing, coordinating, and supporting academic programs focused on community engagement.
