Richter's experience lies in the science and management of ecosystems, especially of soils, forests, and watersheds. He can discuss human-environment relations from a variety of perspectives. He is most interested in the functioning of the Earth’s critical zone, the "expanded ecosystem", especially in systems that are significantly altered by humans. He has international experience in the humid tropics with reforestation degraded pastureland and reclamation of mine lands. Co-director of the six-decade old Calhoun Soil-Ecosystem Experiment in South Carolina and of the International Network of Long-Term Soil Experiments.
