Bio/Research

Dr. Canil's main interest is petrology (the "materials science of the Earth"). His research is largely directed at knowing and understanding the deeper Earth system. Mantle-derived rocks are studied using phase equilibria, element partitioning and kinetics to estimate the conditions which rocks experience on their journey to many different environments. His science involves fieldwork, and experimentation at high pressures and temperatures to address questions ranging in time and scale: the formation and recycling of Earth's lithosphere, the rates of magmatic processes, and temperature-time history of diamonds, the mantle's role in orogeny and uplift, the chemical potential of oxygen in the mantle. Recent emphasis is turning to the role of the mantle in the geochemical behaviour of atmophile elements and heavy metals that cycle through the exosphere.
