Under Byrd's leadership, URI's School of Education was named one of 11 institutions that have exemplary teacher education program reports by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. URI also been awarded accreditation from the national council for the past 20 years. Byrd and URI colleague Peter Adamy were the principal lead investigators for the Rhode Island Teacher Education Renewal project, a 5-year, $7.5 million Teacher Quality Enhancement Partnership grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The project led to successful reform of teacher education and readiness in classrooms across the state.
