Bio/Research

The integration and functions of behaviour, morphology and physiology relevant to the ecological design of organisms.

My laboratory is investigating holistic evolutionary theory based on integrated life history tradeoffs. The main model is the transgenic GH mouse that grows to double normal sizes. The costs of doubled growth rates on other functions reveals the hierarchy of evolved allocative tradeoffs. This work has resulted in new theories related to sleep, and aging and generated a general model unifying neuroendocrine-genomic transcriptional control. Aspects currently addressed or in progress relate to feeding, thermogenesis, learning, reproduction, growth, immunology, behavioural activity, sleep and aging, all in a global integrative context. We are expanding this approach to other transgenic models, crosses among them and pharmacological interventions.
