Professor Arel is co-principal investigator on a multi-year collaborative research project between the Watson Institute of International Studies at Brown University, US, the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, Moscow, Russia, and the Institut National d’Etudes Démographiques (INED), Paris, France. In the past year, project meetings and workshops were held at the AAASS Convention, Toronto (November 2003), INED (January 2004), and the ASN Convention, New York (April 2004), and a collaborative book manuscript is under completion.
Professor Arel is a member of the ongoing workshop Eurasia in Transition, periodically held at the Davis Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University (December 2003, May 2004), and was discussant at the workshop “Household Economies in Twentieth-Century Russia”, University of Chicago (October 2003).
