Bio/Research
Professor Doug White received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Connecticut and his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Bates College. Prior to joining the faculty at Merrimack College, Dr. White was an assistant research professor at the University of Tennessee and held a post-doctoral position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His research focuses mainly on the theory of thermal conductivity in solids. In particular he has worked in the fusion energy field, applying phonon scattering theory to determine the effect of the fusion environment on various materials (most recently in diamond). While at Merrimack he has continued with this and other work and has received grants and consulting contracts from various organizations including: the U.S. Department of Energy, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Boston Scientific. Dr. White describes himself as a “teacher first” and that teaching is “the most rewarding career I can imagine”. He enjoys biking and tennis and there are rumors he is learning to play the guitar.
