Bio/Research

Dr. Douglas A. Holder graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1969, following which he then pursued residency training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, a teaching hospital of McGill University.

Dr. Holder joined the faculty of McMaster University in 1976 as one of the first 4 Canadian recruits into the Department of Medicine, and has been at the Hamilton General site ever since. During this time he has held the administrative roles of CCU Director, then Heart Investigation Unit Director, then Head of the Clinical Service of Cardiology and Cardiac and Vascular Program Director, stepping down from these responsibilities in 2006.

In 1982 Dr. Holder initiated the PTCA program in Hamilton and has enjoyed being part of the continuing development of this technique over the years. In the 90's he served as an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in the Specialty of Cardiology.

In 2006, Dr. Holder was the recipient of a Cornerstone of Care award from the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation and was also honoured by the Residency training Program with the E. L. Fallen Teaching Award. Over the years, Dr. Holder has been fortunate to work with outstanding colleagues, be they physicians, nurses, technicians, or support personnel who have shared a common goal of professional patient focused care at the highest level possible. He is currently Professor of Medicine and remains fully active in Interventional and Consultative Cardiology.
