My expertise is in rock mechanics, geotechnical engineering, and engineering geology with emphasis on applied research associated with surface and underground excavations in rock for civil and mining applications. I work in a wide spectrum of areas and seek research projects with a strong applied engineering component. I have experience with terrestrial photogrammetry as a field measuring and mapping tool.
The research areas arise from problems posed by industry or by my desire to explore new and better ways to measure, monitor, analyse, understand, and predict the performance of ground around an excavation. This has included techniques to artificially support and stabilize excavations (surface or underground) to enhance safety and minimize dilution of valuable ore. Application of the principles of engineering geology, geomechanics and blasting is often required in the research.
